Spring photography projects…

So far this spring I’ve assigned myself several photography projects, notably getting good photos of some of the moorland birdlife in my area, especially owls. This has taken time away from my reptile monitoring but is helping to provide distribution records of some species not known to breed in certain areas where I have found them this season. So apologies that the recent posts have been bird heavy, although I did see a common lizard (Zootoca vivipara) while out on the moors the other day.

Off to Asturias in northern Spain at the weekend so expect a field report from one of the most beautiful areas of Europe very soon!

Not a reptile seen this weekend….

However, a number of nice birds were seen, including an owl hat-trick. The usual Short-eared owl (Asio flammeus) was out hunting but one evening a Long-eared owl (Asio otus) showed up out hunting up on the tops. This morning the usual Little owl (Athene noctua) was out enjoying some brief sunshine until some cheese dicks flew past on their moto cross bikes scaring him half to death.

Bank holiday

This bank holiday weekend I’ve spent quite a bit of time out and about. On Saturday and Sunday a number of nice birds were seen, highlight being a Short-eared owl (Asio flammeus). This was seen twice over the weekend, the second time it was a sat on a post right next to the road but as always when this happens there is a car right behind you. Today in nice weather a male adder (Vipera berus) was interacting with two females, a further male was happy to be by himself a little further away. Thanks to Steve for some info regarding some bird species.
