Freshly sloughed

The other day I had a look at one of my sites for Adder (Vipera berus) and within a short space of time I found five large females. All of them had freshly sloughed their skin and looked really beautiful so I took the opportunity to take a nice photo of one of them. In addition I saw a couple of Common toads (Bufo bufo), two Common frogs (Rana temporaria) and a Palmate newt (Lissotriton helveticus).

13th June

Carl and I decided to spend the day visiting some Grass snake (Natrix natrix) sites, although the weather didn’t look promising. Arriving at the first site we were greeted with a rain shower, although some locals told us they had seen a snake just before the rain started. Waiting for the rain to stop we stumbled across a large female grass snake which had been chopped in half! Not cool. We decided to drive to another location and upon arrival the sun had just come out. Carl found a large female snake that had a number of injuries along it’s body. After some more searching we didn’t find anything else so we went back to the original spot. Although now cloudy and quite cool we found four more grass snakes, three large females and one smaller male, all in pre-slough condition. This meant they were not very photogenic but we were happy what we had found. Then the rain really started so we retreated for some dinner for a few hours until the rain stopped. In the evening we had a short search for Adders (Vipera berus), finding only one young female.

Corfu and Paxos

Sorry for the radio silence, I have been back a week now from Corfu and Paxos but computer problems have meant I could not upload any photos until now. As usual I had a great trip, Paxos in particular delivering some surprises. For now here is a photo of one of the Aesculapian snakes (Zamenis longissimus) that we found, this one from Corfu. Report and photos on the way soon.
